St Augustine - an extra day (2014-03-18)

We're still in St Augustine, having extended our stay by one day, so that we could get laundry and a bit more sight-seeing in before we left.

Yesterday the rain did indeed come.  In fact it fell for most of the day, meaning that we hunkered down inside the boat, reading and watching a bit of TV.  Not too big a deal though, as we were quite comfortable, warm and dry inside the boat.

Today we had a bit of rain in the morning, but that stopped mid-morning, and we were able to get to shore to take care of our laundry.  It stayed cloudy and cool all day, but we took the opportunity to hit the St Augustine streets one last time.

One of the things we had wanted to do was to visit the fort here, the Castillo de San Marcos, which is the oldest fort in the continental US.  St Augustine is the oldest European established settlement in the continental US as well.

The fort overlooks the St Augustine harbour on the Matanzas River, and is quite impressive.

Hard to really capture the scale of this place with a camera

After our tour of the fort we spent a couple more hours walking through the St George Street pedestrian outdoor mall, which takes up about 10 city blocks in all.

Tonight the harbour is a bit lumpy due to a northeast wind blowing across the river, bouncing the boat around and making a bit of noise with the waves slapping against the hull.

Tomorrow the weather is forecasted to be quite nice, so we'll continue with our northward journey.  We'll make a quick stop at a free dock on the north end of St Augustine to hit up the Publix grocery store a couple blocks away, and then we'll continue on to Jacksonville, where we hope to stop at the free dock on the ICW that we stopped at on our way south.
