Beaufort SC (2014-03-23)

N32° 25.798', W80° 40.557'

Tonight we are at anchor in Beaufort, South Carolina, just west of the city marina, in what will soon be a large mooring field.

Friday morning we left Jekyll Island and continued on with the Georgia section of the AICW.  One of the worst sections of the AICW, the Little Mud River, was on the day's schedule, but we have lucked out with the tide timings for our travels again, and hit the Little Mud just after high tide.

It was a cool blustery day's travel on Friday, and we ran most of the day from the flybridge with the isenglass closed up.  We were happy when we finally pulled off of the AICW onto the Wahoo River, and dropped the anchor.  The Wahoo River is a pretty remote spot, and, as the old joke goes, it isn't the middle of nowhere, but you can see it from there.

We had a very peaceful night on the Wahoo and Saturday dawned with cloudy skies, and forecasts of rain in the afternoon.  As we were raising the anchor we looked to the south of us and saw a rainstorm approaching.  At a travel speed of 7 knots, there wasn't much chance of us outrunning the rain, but at least we managed to get the anchor up and underway before the rain hit.  We spent most of the day with off and on showers, at times quite heavy.  I chose to pilot the boat from the flybridge, thinking that as soon as I relocated to the lower helm the rain would stop.  Unfortunately, it didn't actually stop until just before we pulled off of the AICW at our next anchorage, Herb River, a couple miles east of Savannah Georgia.

My view most of Saturday

So, after a wet day's travel we ended up with a quite nice evening, with the skies clearing and the sun coming out to visit for at least a couple hours.  We had another peaceful night at anchor on the Herb River.

Today we awoke to thick fog, which finally started to burn off by about 0800.  By 0930 we had the anchor up and were underway once again.  It was much warmer today, with partly cloudy skies.  Today we left Georgia and entered South Carolina, and ended the day in Beaufort.

Beaufort is a very nice city, and is another one of those often talked about places in cruising blogs.  After getting the anchor set we tidied up the boat, did our Customs check-in, and then took the dinghy to the free town courtesy dock so we could go for a walk.  While in town we decided to have supper at a restaurant, and on the advice of a couple of other cruisers at the town dock, we stopped in a place called Luthers.  Great food and good prices, but a bit of a wait for our food.

After supper we did some more walking in town, looking at some spectacular old houses, before calling it a night just before sunset and made our way back to the boat.

Some very old trees here

Tomorrow morning we'll see what Mother Nature has in store for us, but more than likely we'll be continuing with our north-bound travels up the AICW.
