Our relaxing time in the Admiralty Islands is coming to a close. Tomorrow we will begin heading back to Trenton, where we will be leaving the boat next week while we head back to Ottawa for a few days.
We ended up spending a week at McDonald Island, with a visit in to Gananoque on Tuesday to get water, do some shopping and take care of our laundry. The Labour Day long weekend was pretty quiet on the island, with bad weather keeping most people at home. Sunday was a pretty nice day, and McDonald Island actually got busy for a day.
Yesterday we decided to relocate for a couple more days, and headed back to Beau Rivage Island, to the same dock where we started at when we first came here, almost three weeks ago. Tomorrow morning we'll head into Gananoque to do some shopping and fill up on water. After that we'll head back to Kingston, taking the Bateau Channel, and with any luck we'll tie up at Cedar Island for the night.
While on McDonald Island we saw a few interesting sights. Firstly, we've seen a lot of boats that have SeaDoos instead of a dinghy. This was the first boat we've seen towing two of them (his and hers? :-)).

On Sunday, this beauty showed up on McDonald Island so the captain and crew could take a potty break. Apparently this is a replica of a boat from the 1920's, that was built in the 90's. It's pretty much faithful to the original, being all wood construction. They did do a little upgrading in the engine department though...

Over the last week we've met couples from two boats that have been to the Bahamas, so we picked their brains for whatever info we could. The first was Larry and Diane from S/V Lady Di. Yesterday we met Don and Lynn from S/V Redshift, which is a stunning yellow trimaran.
Don and Lynn cruised for five years aboard a Fusion catamaran that they built themselves almost ten years ago. They retired from the cruising game two years ago and switched up to this tri that they keep in Picton for the summers. As they had been in the Bahamas only a couple of years ago, the info they were able to pass on was very current, and quite helpful.
We really enjoyed our time in the Admiralty Islands. The islands that we stayed on were peaceful and picturesque, and were very well tended to by Parks Canada staff. Add to that the close proximity to Gananoque, and the convenience of a free town dock, making for easy access to take care of chores and getting groceries. It also made it very easy for the kids to come visit us. We're hoping to make it back down this way later in September and possible check out a few more of the Thousand Island National Park islands.
I shudder at the thought of the upkeep on that wood boat, but what a beauty!
