Hallowell Mills Cove (2013-09-06)

N 44° 02.013', W 077° 08.087'

Friday night swinging gently on anchor in Hallowell Mills Cove.  TGIF...

We ended up staying an extra day on Beau Rivage due to bad weather.  Thursday brought clear skies, but wind.  We had a bit of a squirrelly launch from the dock at Beau Rivage, but we managed to get off without anything worse than a few skipped heartbeats.

We then went into Gananoque for a shopping trip and water refill.  Just after lunch time we headed out to begin our trek westward.  We decided to take the Bateau Channel, which runs north of Howe Island, for a change of scenery and to try some new water that we hadn't been on before.

The Bateau Channel is a very nice route, with some nice scenery.  For example, there was this house with a boat very similar to ours, and a honking big windmill turning smartly in the brisk breeze.

Windmill envy...
A little further along we came upon this floatilla of pool toys, bobbing patiently in the waves.

I think they're sad the kids are in school now
The breeze was still pretty strong throughout the day, but didn't we get a nice gust from the west (from the left in the picture below) just as we were coming in to the dock, which resulted in a "go around" (all the navaids radar techs will know that one :-)).  Thanks to a hand from a helpful fellow boater, and a much tighter second approach, we made the second attempt successfully.

Back to Cedar Island
It was a pretty cold night, but the duvets did their job, and this morning rewarded us with a beautiful sunrise.

Sunrise on Cedar Island
We left Cedar Island fairly early this morning, as the weather forecast was calling for the winds to shift around to the southwest this afternoon.  This would have meant winds coming in off of Lake Ontario, making the gaps on either side of Amherst Island very uncomfortable.  As it was we had a pretty stiff breeze from the west most of the day, and a bit of a chop in the water, but not too bad a day's travel overall.

We had considered the anchorage at Glen Island for tonight, but tomorrow is supposed to bring some wind and rainstorms, with winds from west to southwest.  That meant Hallowell Mills Cove was a much more suitable anchorage.

We're going to play it by ear tomorrow, but more than likely we'll just hunker down and wait out the bad weather here at anchor, and then continue on up the Bay of Quinte on Sunday.
