One Month

We cast off the lines on the 15th of July, one month ago.  Things are going great, and the boat is doing great for us.  So far we've put 71.1 hours on the engine, and 428 statute miles under the keel.

We're not sure as of yet how much fuel we've used, but the fuel gauge is showing about half for each tank.  After last year's boating season, my calculations put our fuel burn for the season at 1.5 US gal per hour.  At 1.5/hour that puts us at 106.65 gallons used, just slightly under half of our fuel capacity (225 US gal), which seems to agree with our gauges.  If I use a more conservative 2 US gal per hour, then that puts us at 142.2 gallons used.  I think the reality is somewhere between those two numbers, so that puts us in our expected fuel burn 'ballpark'.

For the first month of cruising, this is the breakdown of where we've spent nights;

  • 5 nights on docks on the Rideau,
  • 8 nights on docks on the Trent-Severn,
  • 4 nights on island docks in the Thousand Islands National Park,
  • 1 night on a city wall (free after whining... :-)),
  • 1 night in a marina, and
  • 12 nights at anchor.
We don't really have any concrete plans for the next two months of the shakedown.  We're really liking the islands in the Thousand Islands National Park though, so I can see us spending a lot of time down this way.  We're also probably going to spend some more time up in the Bay of Quinte area, and Picton is on our short list.

  1. Have you noticed what the prices for diesel and gas are along the waterways? Curious as to the difference from on the roads. Still looking at boats here and kills me how much cheaper the gas boats are vs a good diesel boat.

  2. Unfortunately, most fuel docks don't have gas price signs like gas stations do, so you never really know until you go in. It's something we'll have to deal with in the next few weeks though, so I probably be making some phone calls to nail down some prices.
