I had picked up some new spark plugs at Canadian Tire on the weekend, as well as a feeler gauge to gap them with. I replaced the old plugs with new, gapped correctly this time, and pulled off the fuel filter to give it a cleaning. It's the type that you just clean, rather than replace, which is nice. After that I reviewed the starting procedure from the manual I downloaded (I never had a manual for this outboard) and gave it a try. It took quite a few pulls, but it came to life. I took a run in the dinghy yet again to test it out and it worked great. I let it sit for a few hours to cool down and then tried again, and it started after only a few pulls.
I think I've got it pretty much sorted, but I'm going to keep puttering away at it, both to confirm that I've got it working reliably, but also to build up my familiarity with it's quirks. At least all I'll need to do is get it tuned up to make it easier to start. Much less of a wallet hit than a complete repair.
We've had some wild looking weather roll through here, but it looks like it all mostly bypassed us to the north. For a while there were crazy whitecapped waves out on the St Lawrence, but just a moderate breeze here in the bay.
