Tonight finds us safely at anchor in the Liberty State Park anchorage in New York City.
Luck was with us today and the weather window we had been watching for the last couple of days held. The NOAA forecast was calling for 2-3' swells, but both Windfinder and Passageweather were calling for 2' or less. The winds were going to settle down late in the morning, with the best conditions coming in the afternoon. We waited until 1200 before we raised the anchor and headed out through the Point Pleasant Canal to the Manasquan River, and then out through the inlet.
The conditions were even better than we had expected. We ended up with about a 1 foot swell most of the way up the Jersey coast. We did pick up some moderate wind waves for about 15 minutes, but that was about it. Raritan Bay, the large bay between Sandy Hook and the Verranzano Narrows Bridge was a bit of a washing machine, with 2' waves bouncing us around.
It was a busy old afternoon in New York harbour though. We had many large cargo ships and a couple Staten Island ferries to dodge on our way in, but we made it through unscathed, and by 1730 we had the hook down and set.
This puts New Jersey and the Atlantic behind us. Now all we have left ahead of us is the Hudson River and the Erie Canal before we are back in Canada. Tomorrow morning we'll head up the Hudson River with Haverstraw Cove as our destination. This is the same spot we stopped in on the way south in the fall, and is a very sheltered anchorage. It looks like there will be strong winds associated with the weather system that will be rolling through this week, and Haverstraw Cove should be a good spot to ride them out.
