Tonight finds us tied up at the Pelican Marina in Elizabeth City.
Last night was another cold one, and we were awarded with frost all over the decks this morning when we headed out for an early start to make the 0830 opening at South Mills lock.
Brrrrr |
After locking through, we continued on down the Pasquotank River to Elizabeth City. Something I noticed as we were getting further down the river was a bright yellow mark on the day markers.
These yellow marks signify that this is part of the AICW route.
After a couple hours of winding back and forth on the Pasquotank, we finally arrived in Elizabeth City. This is a very cruiser friendly city, with quite a few free docks available. For today we ended up picking up a slip at the Pelican Marina, as we had a package that was being shipped here for Dar, and we wanted to take advantage of the water available at the dock to give the boat a bit of a bath. It had a lot of salt on it from the runs down the Jersey coast, as well as through the Delaware Bay and Chesapeake Bay.
Pelican Marina is a fairly basic no-frills marina, and a bit rough around the edges. It's very reasonably priced though, costing $35 flat rate for a night, power and water included. It does have a very nice bathroom with showers and laundry facilities as well.
Tomorrow we're going to relocate to one of the free docks and do some exploring of the city. Sunday we will probably head out to cross the Albemarle Sound, as long as the marine weather forecast stays favourable. We'll drop the anchor on Sunday night on the Alligator River, and then on Monday go to Belhaven NC, where there is another free dock.
