What's as important as knots, navigation and basic seamanship for a cruiser to learn? The answer is patience.
We've been waiting for weather since we got to Atlantic City. Today is the first day in the past 5 days that there hasn't been a small craft advisory in place. The conditions out on the ocean were such that it was automatically a no-go to go outside. However, the winds also affected our ability to take the inside route down to Cape May. The channels of the inside route are quite narrow, and a lot of it runs through salt marshes with very little protection from the wind. With the amount of windage that our boat has we felt it prudent to wait for the wind to drop off before we attempted the inside route.
We did head over to the Frank Farley marina (run by the Golden Nugget
casino) on Friday to refill our water tank, do some laundry, and do
some shopping. Unfortunately, the closest grocery is a bit far to walk,
so we had to take a cab, adding about $25 to the grocery bill. We did
end up making a quick stop in the casino, and actually left with a
little extra coin in our pockets. Okay, we were only up $1.45, so not
enough to get invited to the high rollers table, but we still felt
pretty good about it. :-) After that we returned to the same spot that
we had anchored at when we got here.
We're watching a potential weather window for tomorrow to take the outside route to Cape May, but unfortunately every time they update the forecast it changes. We'll see what it looks like in the morning, and if it's feasible we'll hop outside. If not, we'll ride the rising tide to Cape May on the inside route.
Bert de Vry put us onto your blog. He was our CPS instructor.
ReplyDeleteWe would have been with you on the trip down but the mother-in-law had a small stroke so our plans were scuttled for this year. So Nancy and I are vicariously traveling the route through you.
Thanks for stopping by, and sorry to hear about the health issues. You have a great boat and it looks like you are at least enjoying it. Hopefully your ducks will line up for you soon as ours did this year.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, Bert is a great source of info about the cruising lifestyle. He has definitely 'been there / done that' and has really helped us while we were planning for this trip.
